Foreign Clothing

The United States is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world, yet we have developed our own distinct culture over the years.  Since people are constantly moving here from different countries you would think seeing those in foreign clothing would seem normal right?  Then why is it when we see someone walking the streets in sometimes vibrantly colored, very non-traditional American clothing it seems to catch our eye? No doubt this might be because it is the color that surprises us, but would you treat that person differently? A lot of people might say they are more cautious with their words so as not to offend someone new to our culture, yet we have no clue for sure that they are.  It is simply their clothing choice that makes us feel like we are speaking to someone completely different from ourselves.

Perhaps we feel like those dressed in traditional garbs of another culture means we should respect them more for not giving into the pressure to conform and staying true to their roots. Should we when we have no idea who this person is?  They might be a convict, or an all around rude person.  Who knows?  We want to hear from you! How would you act if you were in a situation like this?

Does this dress make me look happy?

Have you ever put on a shirt in the morning and thought "people will definitely think I'm in a good mood today because of this outfit" ? Most people would likely say no, but there might be something to this way of thinking.  If you think about all the times you were sick, just been dumped, or fired, I don't think you were rushing to put on your best outfit for a night out. Instead, a lot of people throw on the sweats, and a hat to try and pull themselves together in hopes of appearing happy.  On the opposite side, when people are in a great mood, they are sometimes willing to put in the effort to construct a great outfit.  Have you ever seen someone that looks haphazardly dressed and assumed they were in a rush this morning? Apply the same thinking to someone who is having a bad day or may be battling depression.  Their mind is probably somewhere else, or distracted by something, and not as much thought is going into what they are wearing.

( probably not shooting for the best dressed award)

Not only does what you wear influence how people perceive you, but the colors you choose do as well.  Most of us have seen someone wearing all black, or gothic style clothing and immediately wondered why they would want to look so depressed.  While many business attires are black and white there is something different about someone on the street wearing all dark colors who is clearly not going to a business meeting.

People who dress in brighter colors are often thought as happier and will even put those around them in a better mood.  Certain colors are associated with specific moods that many people interpret similarly.  For instance, blue is calming for many, while white is refreshing and gives the feeling of something new.  Think about this the next time you get dressed and if the outfit and colors you choose seem to indicate the mood you are in. Perhaps you are sad but need to appear very happy, try wearing a nice dress or shirt with bright colors to see if this will positively impact your mood :)

Facial Features: What makes someone beautiful?

  • Physical appearance has been known to have a major impact on our perceptions of others
  • As we have previously stated, people presume that "what is beautiful, is good" and associate attractive people with being:
    • Friendly
    • Intelligent
    • Socially Skilled
    • Warm
    • Interesting
    • Outgoing
  •  So....how do we know what beautiful is?  Researchers have shown that symmetrical facial features are what make a person attractive.
  • What is facial symmetry?
      • Faces with a high degree of symmetry are typically considered more attractive and symmetry has been associated with good health and genetic quality.
        • Eyes
          • Just above half way down the front of the head
          • 1/5 of the width of the face
        • Ears
          • Lay flat to the head for the most part
          • Extend from the middle of the eye to the opening of the mouth
        • Lip
          • Edges should line up with the pupil of the eye, no thicker than the closed eyelid
        • Nose
          • Just larger than the eye width
          • Not sit too far above the lips
          • Bridge of the nose should extend straight and not be too protruding or flat
        • Chin
          • Gently rounded and smooth
        • Face
          • Oval-shaped with smooth skin and clear cheekbones
        • Eyebrows
          • Tame and separate, but not too thin
  •  Interesting article on how facial symmetry can tell a person's life story.  Check it out!
