Appearance and Social Status

How does physical appearance play a role in people's social status? People are constantly wearing clothing that represents a certain social status, or rank in society. For example, you notice when people are wearing Polo as apposed to a Walmart brand outfit. These are two different brands that give people the appearance of certain social statuses. As college students, we are constantly walking around on campus and noticing the different clothing that people wear. Some people are carrying Coach bags while others are carrying Target bags. The people that are carrying Coach purses seem of a higher status than those that are carrying Target bags because Coach purses are more expensive and prestigious. Although clothing is not always the correct indicator of status, it definitely can play a huge role. People that wear dress pants to class as opposed to jeans can also be an indicator. Dress pants are usually more expensive and classy. People are constantly judging others according to their clothing. Physical appearance plays a huge role in the social status of our society today!
